This is a unique trekking experience that takes you through the valley of the Budhi Gandaki River. Opened for tourism purposes in 1991 A.D., this trip starts at Gorkha, an ancient Kingdom in central west, in a circular pattern and extends towards the Budhi Gandaki Valley. The trek through this ancient valley presents astounding mountainous views, ascending through the cascading Gandaki gorge into the Tibetan enclaves of Samdo, Sam Gaon to finally cross the immutable Larky La pass of Snowy peaks. Glissading down to reach Karche and Tilije through the alpine meadows and dense forests to the cultivated farmlands in the Marsyangdi valley, the route also links up with the eastern sector of the Annapurna Circuit.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Drive from Kathmandu to Gorkha
  • The trip begins with a drive from the capital to Gorkha. It’s a short drive of about 5 hours and will be taking you through the banks of the Trisuli and Marshyangdi River and also through the hilly terrain of the central west. Gorkha is the ancient capital of the Shah Dynasty monarchs of Nepal and has a significant role in the making of the country as a whole.
  • Day 02: Trek from Gorkha to Arughat (700 m AMSL)
  • The second day begins with a trek shortly after breakfast. The trek takes to Arughat amidst the hills of the central west.
  • Day 03: Trek from Arughat to Sotikhola (815 m AMSL)
  • Following breakfast, the next day begins with a walk following the river banks of the Budhi Gandaki towards its origin. The trek takes you through Simre and a few other villages to reach Arkhat River, and finally ascends towards the confluence of the Soti Khola in about six hours.
  • Day 04: Trek from Sotikhola to Machakhola (900 m AMSL)
  • The fourth day takes you through a descending trail, to climb up to the mountain ridge at Almara, and following the forest to reach Riden Gaon. The wide valley cuts into another side of the river bank to enter the Budhi Gandaki River. Following the sandy river banks of the Budhi Gandaki, the trail reaches Lambeshi and finally reaches Machakhola.
  • Day 05: Trek from Machakhola to Jagat (1250 m AMSL)
  • The trip begins with a trek from Machakhola towards Jagat. After crossing Khrola Bensi, there is a hot spring, locally called “Tatopani”. The trail follows huge forests to reach Dovan, the confluence. The rapids and the scenery changes drastically as the elevation increases past Dovan. Continuing past the confluence, you would finally reach Jagat, where you would stay overnight. Jagat has a police checkpoint, where all the trekking permits are checked.
  • Day 06: Trek from Jagat to Deng
  • The trip begins from Jagat after ascending a terraced hill, which presents an astonishing view of the Sringi Himal (7177 m AMSL). Continuing on the trail, the Gandaki valley narrows and finally takes you to the confluence of the Deng River.
  • Day 07: Trek from Deng to Namrung
  • Following the trail upstream of the Deng River, comes a tiny village of Deng with just 4 houses. Walking through the newly built tunnel to avoid the hassle of the traditional steep climb, you would reach Ghap. Ghap welcomes you with the Mani stones and Chortens all around, the signature of the Tibetan Culture influence. Walking past Ghap to cross the wooden bridge over Budhi Gandaki and following the trail through the scattered houses and cultivated fields, you would reach Namrung. Namrung has another police checkpoint to verify the trekking permits and to keep records of the visitors.
  • Day 08: Trek from Namrung to Lho (3148 m AMSL)
  • Crossing the Hinan River which originated from the Linda Glacier, you would continue towards Lho. The trekking trip for the day takes about six hours and offers fascinating views of the Naike Peak, Manaslu North (7774 m) and Manaslu (8150 m).
  • Day 09: Trek from Lho to Sama Gaon (3517 m AMSL)
  • Continuing onto the next day of the trip, you will pass the stone gate and through a long Mani wall, offering spectacular views of Peak 29 ahead. If interested, for a close-up view of the Manaslu, you could even go visit the Pungen Glacier. Following the lateral moraine of the Pungen Glacier, you would reach the village of Sama.
  • Day 10: Reserve day for rest and acclimatization
  • Day 11: Trek from Sama Gaon to Samdu(3738 m AMSL)
  • Climbing terraced hills on the opposite bank of the Budhi Gandaki River, you would reach one of the most remote permanent settlements in the region at Samdu. Samdu has about 200 occupants in forty closely built houses.
  • Day 12: Trek from Samdu Peak to Samdu
  • The day begins with a climb up to the Samdu peak, to come back to Samdu village for a night stay.
  • Day 13: Trek from Samdu to Dharamsala (4480 m AMSL)
  • The day begins with a trek towards Dharmashala, going around the valley of the Salka Khola and climbing to reach the stone house. The house is actually a crossing over for the pass, and not a lodge.
  • Day 14: Trek from Dharmashala to Larkay la Pass (5213 m AMSL) to Bimtang (3890 m AMSL)
  • Becoming a long gentle climb beside a moraine, the trek for the day starts at the ridge in front of the stone house. Reaching the top of the moraine at 4700 m, the trail becomes rougher and 3-4 hours past the stone house, the weather becomes extremely windy and cold, climbing on to reach the Larkay La Pass. Descending again through the top of the moraine, it makes a long steep descent to cross the moraine and then descends more gently. Reaching the large meadow, the trail has improved greatly, and you finally reach Bimtang passing through a mani wall and a small rest house.
  • Day 15: Reserve day for rest and acclimatization
  • Day 16: Trek from Bimtang to Tilije (3010 m AMSL)
  • The trek begins with the fall of the trail from the Bimtang meadow to cross a glacial stream by a wooden bridge. Climbing over the side of the moraine you would then descend through a forest with conifers and rhododendron to reach Hompuk. The trail improves through to Dudh Khola, and then follows the river through forests to a Goth. Continuing through the fields over a clear stream and passing houses and more fields interspersed with rhododendron and oak forests, you would reach Tilje, following the north bank of the river.
  • Day 17: Trek from Tilije to Jagat (1250 m AMSL)/Syanje (1175 m AMSL)
  • The next day begins with a fall from Tilije towards Tal. Crossing the wooden plank over the Dudh khola, the gentle descent begins to reach Tal, through a chorten-shaped arch past a mani wall. Proceeding gently downwards past Tal, you would reach Syanje, and if permitted by time, you can also climb upto Jagat from Syanje.
  • Day 18: Trek from Jagat/Syanje to Nagdi/Khudi
  • Continuing the trip from Syanje, the fall becomes steeper towards Jagat, and takes almost 2 hours even though it’s visible on the other ridge. Steeply falling, the track continues towards Bahundanda, inhabited by the Bahuns, Tamangs and Gurungs of the region. On approach towards Bahundanda is a suspension bridge over the Nagdi Khola, before climbing on the plateau to reach Jagat.
  • Day 19: Trek from Nagdi/Khudi to Besisahar (825 m AMSL)
  • The last day of the trip begins with trek down the narrow valley past Nagdi/Khudi to reach Bhulbhule, and finally after crossing the Pawa Khola comes Besisahar, the district headquarter of Lamjung, from where you can hail a bus to Kathmandu.
  • Day 20: Drive from Besisahar to Kathmandu.
